This began as one of those “copy and paste as your status” things from facebook, and I’m not generally one to buy into this kind of status update, but I know there will be people reading this and who will be affected in some way, but it can’t be said it enough…Many people think that a suicide attempt is a selfish move because the person just does not care about the people left behind.
When a person gets to that point, they truly believe that their loved ones will be much better off with them gone. It’s a mental illness and not selfishness.
TRUTH: Depression is a terrible disease and seems relentless. I’ll imagine you reading this now will have been or known someone that’s aware of the black dog or dealt with family members in a crisis, and some have lost friends and loved ones.
FACTS: There were 6,708 suicides in the UK and ROI in 2013. Male suicides in Wales rose by 23 per cent between 2012 and 2013. The rate for males (26.1 per 100,000) is at its highest since 1981. Three-quarters of suicides in the UK are by men
In the Summer of 2016, we were in the midst of Wales’ best ever footballing period – something that was started by Gary Speed. On the surface you’d think everything was fine – but as we now know – it wasn’t. If you ever think you’re unable to cope in anyway – you just speak to someone.
Let’s look out for each other and stop sweeping mental illness under the carpet.
