To think that back in the latter part of the 90’s, male Hollywood A-listers didn’t think a love story which involved a ghost would work. Now, it’s hard to imagine a world without a pottery scene set to a Righteous Brothers’ classic number one.

Fast forward to 2013, Cardiff and the world premiere of Ghost-The Musical Tour. For a first night which was in actuality delayed for 2 days due to technical problems, it went pretty well. We were prepared to expect delays, and yes, there were, in the second act, but this is only to be expected. Technically speaking it’s one of the most complex musicals you’ll see. Not only in it’s aural styling, but the look and how video & projection is used.

With Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glenn Ballard (produced Alanis Morrissette’s Jagged Little Pill), you have a musical pairing to rival the best in contemporary musical theatre. In places it is a bit cheesy, but the sheer emotion and good humour make it a really great musical – one for the ladies definitely. Certain songs contain such emotion they can easily bring you to tears.

This leads me onto the actual performance from last night. Rebecca Trehearn as Molly is simply amazing. There are not many performers I’ve seen that can give me the “hair on the back of the neck” experience. She has previously won the “Wow factor” on S4C, and on last night’s performance you can see why. Both male leads, Stewart Clarke (Sam) and David Robert (Carl) were exceptional. Special mention to Wendy Mae Brown for stealing the show at times as Oda Mae Brown, and yes, she does have the same name as the character she plays.

But when you take away the audio and video effects, you still have, at its heart, a love story. You may have seen the film and want to see the musical, or you may not have seen the film and just want to see one of the best modern musicals. Whatever your reason, you won’t be disappointed.

I loved it, will you? I think, ditto.

Ghost-The Musical is at Wales Millennium Centre until April 27th 2013 then continues it’s UK tour
